Description
An outdoor kitchen design is an ensemble of a variety of devices for cooking outdoors. Kitchens designed for outdoor use are made of wear-resistant materials. For this, we use metal that has an anti-corrosion coating and can withstand high temperatures. The surface that comes into contact with food does not affect its taste in any way and does not emit harmful substances.
You can order a custom-made outdoor kitchen design for upcountry home or city outdoor recreation at low prices. These contain:
- Grill – a device for frying meat, fish, and vegetables over an open fire. If there is a shelf, it will be convenient to put dishes on it;
- Jiko – a structure in the form of a hearth designed for installing a cauldron. Equipped with convenient handles for carrying and stable legs;
- Barbecue tables and outdoor tables – durable metal surfaces that do not deform under high temperatures. You can place hot pots and pans on them.
Stainless steel outdoor kitchen design
The weather in Kenya depends not only on the season but also on the location. For the long life of an outdoor kitchen, you need a material that can withstand not only the harsh sunrays but also the rain.
A stainless steel kitchen is an anti-corrosion metal with high density and plasticity, capable of withstanding not only temperature changes (up to 100 degrees) but also environments with a high level of acidity or alkalinity. At the same time, stainless steel is completely not afraid of water.
A stainless steel outdoor kitchen is so durable that it can withstand wind, heat, and any other weather conditions all year round. It can rain, snow, or even storm outside. For the production of our outdoor kitchens, we use AISI304 stainless steel, resistant to harsh winds and weather conditions.
Outdoor kitchen in the countryside
Country life includes outdoor dining and simply spending time in nature. A well-designed outdoor kitchen is very popular today. It is an ideal place to cook and enjoy fresh air without the discomfort of heat in the warm season. A simple gazebo with a barbecue or a solid structure with a stove and utilities – it does not matter what the kitchen project will be.
This is a building of prime necessity on any site!
Modern designs
A couple of wall cabinets, an electric or gas stove, a washbasin, a dining table covered with oilcloth, and a few chairs are all you need. Make the interior as simple and functional as possible. You needed nothing extra, just the essentials. That was an outdoor kitchen design of an ordinary summer residence in the past. Since then outdoor kitchen design of the summer kitchen has changed a lot both externally and in content.
Furniture and appliance manufacturers have developed special collections for it: modern, functional, and stylish. Countertop manufacturers have also tried their best.
Today it is rather conditional, as there are projects of outdoor kitchens with closed rooms that are warm even in winter. As a result, the place where food is prepared is now also a space for pleasant relaxation and communication with family and friends.
Choosing a place for an outdoor kitchen
Whether it is a closed or open kitchen, you cannot build it in any free space you want. For future convenience, consider the following factors:
- install an outdoor kitchen in the garden as close to the house as possible. But away from toilets, septic tanks, cowsheds, compost pits and roads;
• use a stove or grill to prevent combustion of flammable materials – hay, firewood, etc.; - if possible, build an outdoor kitchen in the country, in the shade of trees – it will be more comfortable to cook and eat in the heat;
- Pay attention to the availability of necessary communications nearby – water supply, sewerage, electricity. An outdoor kitchen serves the same purpose and functions as an indoor kitchen. And therefore has the same plumbing needs. Because many appliances and fixtures in an outdoor kitchen need to be connected to a water supply, sewer drains, and electricity.
- consider the wind direction when placing the stove to avoid smoke in the dining area;
- the choice of location also depends on the type and the outdoor kitchen design – a separate building or adjacent to the main building? Each option has its advantages and disadvantages.
• when grilling in a separate outdoor kitchen in a country house, smoke and odors will not get inside, which means your food will not smell of soot. But only in a spacious area can such a summer kitchen be equipped. - An adjacent wall will cost less because at least one wall already exists. Plus, you won’t have to move far to prepare breakfast or lunch. The downside is that the smell will leak into the bedroom and living room.
Kitchen layout: features
According to the planning features, the design of an outdoor kitchen in a private home can be an extension adjacent to the house. Before choosing an outdoor kitchen design layout option, consider the features.
An outdoor kitchen in the village has the following features:
- If there is space for an extension in a country home, then a separate building will be built to decorate the landscape.
- If your family has pets and/or children and there is a separate building, they will have a place to play and have fun.
- This type of outdoor kitchen is convenient for spending cozy summer evenings with a large group of friends. Because the cooking area and dining room are separated from the main part of the house.
- Consider the distance to amenities within the home, which may require crossing open spaces to access the main house.
Outdoor kitchen design options
Depending on the location and type of the site, outdoor kitchens are divided into several categories – extensions to houses and independent buildings, as well as open and closed. Freestanding kitchens are ideal for large families and companies, where they can spend time comfortably all year round.
Open outdoor kitchen design
Make it a fairly simple structure that can be used as a place to relax and a gazebo. The grills are usually placed under a canopy. The advantages include:
- Such kitchens are built quickly and cheaply.
- For cooking in such a kitchen, the simplest household appliances and utensils are installed.
This type of kitchen has more disadvantages than closed ones:
- The building is not protected from insects and bad weather.
Closed outdoor kitchen design
Such options for an outdoor kitchen, as a rule, are a separate building. They have many advantages:
- The kitchen is protected from rain, sun, and insects.
- You can have a lot of appliances and furniture in the kitchen to make the space versatile and comfortable to work in.
- An insulated summer kitchen can become an additional place to accommodate guests.
This type of kitchen has significant disadvantages – it is expensive to build and requires approval of the project by government officials.
There are numerous outdoor kitchen designs
Veranda
It is an extension of the house and can be glazed or equipped with casement windows. In such premises, it is allowed to install stoves or barbecues, provided that fire safety requirements are strictly observed.
Usually located near the house, it is a frame structure with a ceiling. Light curtains can be hung on the sides to partially protect yourself from insects, wind, and rain. This is a budget option for small garden plots.
Beautiful outdoor kitchens in the form of a gazebo
A separate building in a quiet corner of the site. There are no walls in a gazebo outdoor kitchen design, their function is performed by multiple supports. Wooden boards or climbing plants can be fixed between the supports. This will help protect vacationers from bad weather and insects.
Combined outdoor kitchen in the courtyard of a private house
Combine elements of open and closed kitchens. The overall perception depends on the owner’s imagination and financial capabilities. As a rule, this design has one solid wall, and the remaining sides can be open or glazed. As a result, the building retains the lightness of its exterior.
How to Make a Gazebo Kitchen? Tips for Building, Renovating, and Designing.
Tip 1: Choose the best location
No matter how well-thought-out and beautiful your outdoor kitchen is, its unfortunate location on the site can complicate construction and further manipulations. Therefore, first of all, you should carefully consider the location.
From a practical point of view, it is more convenient to have the kitchen near the house. This makes it easier for the residents of the villa to move between objects. And the installation of utilities is cheaper, faster, and simpler. However, from an aesthetic point of view, something closer to the “sights” of the site that can be admired (for example, near a pond or garden) is more appropriate. Additional advantages also include the following factors: protection from the wind, privacy from the views of neighbors, and proximity to trees that can shade the building and create coolness on hot days.
Where is it better not to place an outdoor kitchen? Near roads, garages, toilets, septic tanks/compost pits, chicken coops, and other places where unpleasant odors, noise, exhaust gases, etc. will interfere with your rest.
Tip 2: Keep your dining area at least 2 meters away from your barbecue/stove
Ideally the standard dimensions, the distance between the dining table and the grill/oven/barbecue should be about 3 m. In this case, smoke, heat, and smells do not disturb vacationers, and shavings, ash, and sparks do not spoil the appearance of the dining area.
Tip 3: How to arrange an outdoor kitchen with your own hands and on a budget?
Build a wooden open gazebo with a light roof without solid walls and a stove. In this case, you can use columnar foundations instead of monolithic or pile foundations. The building itself will consist of 4 (or more) columns and a single-pitched/double-pitched roof with a light roof (for example, made of polycarbonate). This is such a simple design that you can build it yourself in just a few days with a minimal budget.
Tip 4: Distribute lighting evenly
Summer residents often forget to pay enough attention to the lighting of their summer kitchen. But it is with its help that you can create real comfort.
Ideally, artificial light at night should be soft, uniform, and multi-layered. For this reason, the room should be illuminated not by one chandelier, but by several lamps: floor lamps/pendant lamps, sconces, spotlights, pendant lamps, table lamps, and/or garlands of lamps.
With the help of lamps, you can divide the space into zones, for example, the kitchen and the dining room. This way, you will be able to hide your work area in the dark and illuminate the beautiful table only during dinner.
For your convenience when cooking at night, install lighting directly above the work area. If you limit yourself to installing lighting behind you, your back will block the light while you cook.
Metal, plastic, wooden, and wicker lamps with increased water resistance are suitable for lighting open summer kitchens. Ideally, these should be garden lamps.
Solar lanterns can be installed around outdoor kitchens and along roads. They accumulate energy during the day and turn on automatically at night. Indeed, they emit very little light, and on cloudy days they do not charge at all.
Tip 5: Grill, barbecue oven, or stove complex?
Decide what exactly you will use for cooking in the summer kitchen before developing/choosing its design. If the oven is the heart of the city kitchen, then the heart of the country kitchen can be called the grill, brazier, or oven. Before you start designing, think about what kind of fireplace you will need: a brazier, an oven, a grill, or a stove complex. Should the grill be stationary or portable? Coal or natural gas? With a chimney or without a chimney? What are the dimensions and location of the fire source? A lot depends on your choice – from the type of foundation to the shape of the roof. For example, to build a stove, you will not only have to take care of the foundation, chimney, and cladding but also provide a place for storing firewood in the project.
Tip 6: The floor should be especially practical
It doesn’t matter what kind of outdoor kitchen project you have – with or without a terrace, in an open kitchen, the floor can be covered with concrete, stone, tile, or wood. Wooden boards should be covered with oil or wax for outdoor work (varnish is less suitable since over time it will begin to crack and will need to be repainted).
– Decking (made of wood-polymer composite).
– Stone or special outdoor tiles. Admittedly, such a floor requires a solid base and a solid budget.
In a closed kitchen, you can use the same materials, along with traditional tiles and porcelain stoneware.
– By the way, we recommend not to use floors that are too dark, as debris, dirt, and puddles will be especially visible on them.
– If the floor of an open kitchen has a slight slope (1-2 cm), rainwater that gets inside will drain away on its own.
Tip 7: Having cellars in a house with an outdoor kitchen is not always justified
On the one hand, an outdoor kitchen cellar is very convenient, because storing food in it is as convenient as in a refrigerator. On the other hand, its creation greatly increases the cost and complicates the design. Especially if we are talking about an open type, the cellar must be insulated and protected from leaks. Even in the main house, you can live without a cellar and basement, let alone a summer kitchen.
Tip 8: The decoration of the outdoor kitchen, the facades of the houses, and the landscape design should be done in the same style
When choosing or developing an outdoor kitchen project, consider its decoration options, remembering that it should be in harmony with the exterior of the house and other buildings on the site. This way, you can create a real summer cottage complex and gain a sense of order. Color, finish, structure, and style do not necessarily have to match 100%, but the items should have something in common.
– The closer the outdoor kitchen is to the house, the more similar the two buildings will be.
– If there is an object on the site that goes beyond the “general picture”, for example, a hastily built bathroom, then the design of the outdoor kitchen can be planned by combining the characteristics of the bathroom and the house. So some randomness of the buildings will be corrected.
Tip 9: When planning the interior of an outdoor kitchen, stick to the “work triangle” rule
In kitchen arrangement there is a so-called rule, such as “work triangle“, that is, three working areas (sink, stove, and refrigerator) should be located close enough to each other to form a triangle. Ideally, it should be equilateral. Thanks to such a layout of the area, the kitchen is maximally convenient.
– In an outdoor kitchen design, this rule does not always apply in its pure form, since it may be too small, narrow, elongated, or irregularly shaped, instead of an oven, in which a stove, grill, or barbecue is most often used, or may not have a refrigerator at all. However, try to get as close to the ideal as possible and do not block the work area.
