Description

Is there such a thing as Wallpaper Mural? Welcome to Wallpaper Kenya. I’ve spent a decade helping homeowners, interior designers, and corporate fixers transform blank walls into masterpieces. Over this time, I’ve realized that while everyone knows the word “wallpaper,” there is a massive cloud of confusion when we start talking about “murals.”

Often, a client walks into our showroom asking for “wallpaper,” but after five minutes of listening to their vision, I realize what they actually need is a “mural.” Conversely, someone might ask for a mural of a simple marble texture that they could have bought in a standard roll for a fraction of the price.

To get your project right, you need to understand the tools in our shed. Let’s break down the world of wall coverings in plain, expert English.
What Exactly is a Wallpaper Mural?
In the simplest terms, a wallpaper mural is a single, large-scale image or design digitally printed onto a wall-covering material to fit a specific wall’s dimensions.

Think of a standard roll of wallpaper like a patterned fabric: it repeats over and over. Think of a wallpaper mural like a massive photograph or a painting: it has a definitive beginning and an end. It is one cohesive scene—like a misty forest, a map of the world, or a high-definition city skyline—that stretches across your entire wall without repeating the same flower or geometric shape every 53 centimeters.
The “Tailor-Made” Wallpaper Mural Aspect

Unlike standard rolls that we pull off the shelf, wallpaper mural is almost always custom-made. At Wallpaper Kenya, we take your wall’s exact measurements (width and height) and print the image so that it fits perfectly. If there is a mountain in the picture, we can ensure that mountain isn’t “cut off” by your door or your sofa.

The Core Differences: Wallpaper Mural vs. Regular Wallpaper

This is where the layman usually gets tripped up. While they both go on the wall with adhesive, they serve very different functional and aesthetic purposes.
1. The Design Logic
Regular Wallpaper
Uses a “Repeat Pattern.” Whether it’s damask, stripes, or floral, the design is engineered so that when you put two strips side-by-side, the pattern matches up and continues infinitely. It’s designed to be a background.
Wallpaper Mural
Uses a “Scenographic Design.” It tells a story. It’s a singular, non-repeating image. If you bought two murals and put them side-by-side, they wouldn’t “match” because they are meant to be a standalone focal point.
2. Sizing and Packaging
Regular Wallpaper
Comes in standardized rolls. In Kenya, the most common size is $0.53m \times 10m$ (often called a “5-square-meter roll”). You buy as many rolls as you need to cover the area.
Wallpaper Mural
Comes in custom panels. We print it in vertical strips (usually about 1 meter wide), numbered 1, 2, 3, and so on. You install them in a specific sequence to reveal the full picture.
3. The Visual Impact
Regular Wallpaper
It’s often used to provide texture and rhythm to a room. It wraps around corners and can cover all four walls of a room without feeling “too much.”
Wallpaper Mural
It’s a “Feature Wall” king. You wouldn’t usually put a mural on all four walls (unless you want to feel like you’re trapped inside a fish tank). It’s designed to be the “hero” of the room.
Where Regular Wallpaper and Wallpaper Mural Overlap

Despite their differences, they share the same DNA. Understanding these similarities will make your installation and maintenance much easier.
The Material (Substrate)
Both can be printed on the same types of “paper.” At our shop, we use non-woven fabric, vinyl-coated paper, or silk-textured materials for both. If you like the “feel” of a certain wallpaper, we can likely print a mural on that same texture.
The Installation Process
Both require a smooth, primed wall. Both (generally) use the same type of heavy-duty cellulose adhesive. You apply the glue to the wall or the paper, and you use a squeegee to get the bubbles out.
Durability
Both are designed to last 10–15 years if maintained well. They are both generally “wipeable” with a damp cloth, making them great for busy Kenyan households.
The Wallpaper Mural “Grey Area”: When One Mimics the Other

As a sales manager, I see the “overlap” most often in textured patterns.
Sometimes, a client wants a “concrete look.” We have regular wallpaper rolls that look like concrete. However, those rolls have a visible repeat every 60cm. If the client wants a “real” concrete look—where every crack and water stain is unique across a 5-meter wall—we move them to a mural.
The rule of thumb is this: > If you want the wall to look like a “material” (wood, stone, fabric), go with Regular Wallpaper.
If you want the wall to look like a “view” or a “unique piece of art,” go with a Mural.
Which One Should You Choose?
| Feature | Regular Wallpaper | Wallpaper Mural |
| Best For | Subtle backgrounds, all 4 walls | Bold focal points, feature walls |
| Cost | Generally cheaper (mass-produced) | Higher (custom design & printing) |
| Flexibility | Easy to buy “one more roll” | Must be printed all at once |
| Visual Scale | Small to medium patterns | Large, life-sized imagery |
| Installation | Requires pattern matching | Requires sequential paneling |
The Sales Manager’s Expert Tip
If you are on a budget but want a “designer” look, use Regular Wallpaper for the entire room in a neutral texture, and then pick your most prominent wall—the one behind the bed or the TV—and install a Wallpaper Mural.
This “overlap” technique creates a cohesive, professional interior design look without the custom price tag on every single wall.
Final Thoughts for the Layman

Don’t let the terminology intimidate you. At the end of the day, both products are about making your space feel like home.
If you want a room that feels cozy and “clothed,” look at our standard rolls. If you want a room that transports you to the middle of the Serengeti or the streets of Manhattan, you’re looking for a mural.
